Milton Rogovin
Social documentary photographer Milton Rogovin,
now 98 years old, has been likened to the great social
documentary photographers of the 19th and 20th
Centuries, Lewis Hine and Jacob Riis.
His photographs are in the Library of Congress,
the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Center for Creative
Photography and other distinguished institutions
around the world. His work speaks of the humanity of
working people, the poor and the forgotten ones.

This web site is put together by the family of
Anne and Milton Rogovin. The site's primary function
is to show the depth of the photography of our
father and to pursue educational projects based on
the photography. Besides these images being shown in
museums and galleries, Milton and Anne expressed a
strong desire that these photographs "help to feed and
strengthen" the communities where the images
were taken.

Milton Rogovin Celebrated in Chile

My sister Ellen and I are back from 8 days in Chile---a spectacular time. As you know, in 1967 Pablo Neruda and our father collaborated on a month-long project on the island of Chiloé, south of Santiago. Our father's photography was exhibited at the Museo de Arte Moderno Chiloé as part the Museum's 20th anniversary on January 11, 2008. A gorgeous book was published with 40 of Milton's photographs and 40 poems written by a wonderful poet who grew up in the communities where the photos were taken and who now teaches at Villanova Univ. in Havertown Pa. Many individuals and institutions helped to design, fund and print the book entitled Nada Queda Atrás (Nothing Left Behind). Our father is thrilled by the book.

Most exciting about the trip was that we were able to meet some of the people that were photographed by our father 40 years earlier. Identifying and filming those people was accomplished by an incredible librarian and filmmaker!

Before leaving Chile we were able to visit the home of Pablo Neruda in Isla Negra where Neruda hosted Milton before he went to Chiloé!

Check out the Museo de Arte Moderno Chiloé exhibition announcement at We hope to get the book published in the US in a bilingual or English edition.

Milton and Anne
Photograph Copyright Harvey Wang, 2001
Anne Rogovin, Milton's wife, died from brain cancer on July 7, 2003. She was surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Besides being a special education teacher, a parent, and an activist for peace and justice, Anne played an important role in Milton's photography. She often accompanied him when he took his photographs in Buffalo and around the world. Anne encouraged Milton and was the inspiration behind many of his photography series. Anne will always be in our hearts.
